So, after the gauntlet, Aldrine was able to get to work hanging gypsum board. Mostly at night (LATE into the night) and mostly alone. Remember, the walls mostly got the 54" wide 12' sheets. Ceilings got 5/8" too.
You gotta admit, though, it's looking pretty good. He has to be the hardest working man I know. He's good, too.
Have your taper switch to USG Dust Control mud. It is the greatest thing in remodeling! What you spend on it,(bout 50% more expensive than reg. premix) you will more than save in cleanup time.
Just come on down! We'll give you a walk-through. :)
This is playing catch up. We're ahead of our posts by a couple weeks. We just haven't had time to get pics taken and/or uploaded. We'll try to get more up soon.
Ugh. Drywall. My least favorite part of DIY jobs. I'm budgeting to hire someone on the next round we have to do, because some things are just worth the price of NOT having to do it yourself!
(it may need more paint, some trim, and the wrought iron fence installed, but it's no longer "Home Sweet Derelict")
We've been happily married since 2003, together since 2000, and we thought to ourselves, "Hey, let's test the limits of our relationship!" So we're in the process of renovating a 1868 brick home in Covington Kentucky, for better or for worse, richer or poorer, until one of us kills the other one -- or the renovation project gets finished, of course.
This is our chronicle of our journey into renovation. This blog will hopefully prove to be a resource or even a DIY "renovators' manual" for those who come after us.
Our backgrounds:
She is a creative MBA who got the entrepreneurial bug in 2000, and joined her yet-to-be husband in business. While she has always been handy and crafty, Wife has no professional experience in any of the building trades, nor did any of her immediate family.
He is a long time entrepreneur and newsletter publisher. Not particularly crafty, Husband is reasonably handy and has had some experience doing stone work, repairing and rebuilding decks and doing smaller repair projects around the house.
In other words, we're rank amateurs figuring this stuff out as we go along.

Thanks for the value added, Alan.
Alas, that horse is out of the barn. We're just playing catch up here.
BTW, love your blog. VERY useful.

Hey, it really is coming along! Can't wait to see it when it's done and painted.

Kitliz,
Aldrine was a joy to watch work. In the time it would have taken me to set up, he'd finish vast swaths of wall.
It's just not worth it to do yourself unless you have lots of time and you enjoy the process.
There's NO WAY we could have made it look as good as he did no matter how much time we had.
On big reno projects, hire a good (stress good) pro.

Looks great man. The walls are closing in on ya.
